Bike. Fall. Make $844,450

A cyclist in Windsor, Canada has been awarded $844,450 in damages, after hitting an unmarked raised catch basin, which caused him to fall off his bike an be seriously injured. The city of Windsor has been found negligent for failing to post warning signs.

I wonder if the cyclist will donate some of his money back to the city to do some road repair?

2012 Olympic Logo: Yuck.

New brand launches

The logo for London’s 2012 Olympics has been launched. In my opinion, it crashed immediately after launch. What is it supposed to be? Compare it to the Vancouver 2010 logo pictured below.

Even if you do not know what an inukshuk is (a symbol of hope and friendship) at least it resembles something, a person with their arms stretched out.

The London group says their logo will evolve over time. Is that a slight admission on their behalf as to the poor initial choice? Only time will tell what it looks like once the games roll around.

Skip Commercials in Windows Media Center

Anyone out there who uses Media Center to record and watch TV, I highly suggest you take a look at DVRMSToolbox. It is a great tool that will automatically mark and skip commercials in recorded TV. It works on both XP and Vista. The installation could be simplified, but just follow the directions from the website, and it will work fine. It is a free tool, however, for just a couple of dollars, you can also use ShowAnalyzer, which enhances the detection of commercials, and also allows you to skip commercials in shows that are currently recording. I used DVRMSToolbox for the longest time by itself, and was happy, and have recently paid for ShowAnalyzer, and am even happier. Take a look today.

Leaping dolphin injures woman

I like dolphins, but this is a bit too close for even my liking…

Leaping dolphin injures woman

CanWest News Service

Published: Wednesday, December 27, 2006

WELLINGTON - A New Zealand woman was seriously injured after a dolphin jumped into her boat in what a marine specialist said may have been a world-first occurrence.

The 27-year-old was hit by the leaping dolphin in the Bay of Plenty and was rushed by helicopter to Auckland Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

“I’ve been studying dolphins for 40 years and this is the first time I’ve heard of a dolphin jumping into a boat,” expert Alan Baker told New Zealand radio today.

A spokesman for the Auckland rescue helicopter said the woman was sitting in the bow of a small pleasure craft on Tuesday afternoon when it appeared the dolphin miscalculated its leap.

“It jumped up out of the water and hit the woman, giving her a number of injuries,” the spokesman said.

It appeared the dolphin leaped a considerable distance and did not see the boat, he said.

The dolphin swam away apparently unharmed. Bottlenose dolphins grow to more than four metres.

Christmas Gift Ideas That SAVE Money

I really liked this list done up by The Simple Dollar. Below I list the items and my thoughts, but go to the website to get the full details.

1. Filtered Water Bottle – Neh, not my cup of tea.
2. Battery Charger – Absolutely a wise investment. Consider buying high capacity batteries off of eBay and saving even more. Also, make sure others do not throw out the batteries when they are in need of a charge. I have lost many a rechargable battery because of this.
3. “Smart” Power Strips – Never knew about them, but I did know about the phantom power issue, so they seem like a great idea.
4. Blender – I have the Vita Mix myself. Expensive (very) but we use it nearly every day, and they last for a very long time. Just think, if my wife and I were to buy a Booster Juice every day, $5, in 6 months we would have spent nearly $1000. Instead I make my very own Better Than Booster Juice in mere moments.
5. Electricity Usage Monitor – I actually have always wanted something similar. A device that would do the whole house would be ideal, but doing a wall outlet at a time would work too.
6. Flash Drive – I don’t agree it really saves money, but darn useful.
7. High End Solar Calculator – Are you kidding? With the calculator feature of nearly every cell phone, pda, etc, I don’t think an actual calculator is needed by many folks. But the idea of using it to comparison shop is a good one.
8. Efficient Power Supply – Got one of these in the HTPC. If you are gonna use electricity, might as well use it wisely.
9. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs – A definite must have. Except if you have those motion sensing wall switches. I learned the hard way that  CFL bulbs and those switches are not a good match, and have to replace my switch as a result.
10. Efficient Shower Heads – Shh, don’t tell, but I am getting this for the wife as a Christmas present.
11. Fuel-Efficient Scooter – For some, it may work.
12. Solar Outdoor Lighting – In landscaped yards, this looks sharp.
13. Dance Dance Revolution – Or how about the new Wii?
14. Self-Cleaning Electric Shaver – And this is what the wifey is thinking of getting me.
15. Espresso / Cappuccino Machine — DEFINITELY not my cup of tea :-)
16. Programmable Thermostat – Have one. Love it. A must have.
17. Coin Sorter – If you go through lots of coins. Me, I just keep saving them up. Maybe one day I’ll roll enough to pay for one of these. But then I won’t have any coins left to roll?!?
18. Efficient Space Heater – I have recently heard how these are a good way to save money. Certainly a good idea for a morning shower.
19. Solar Christmas Lights – I like this idea solely on principles.
20. Remote Control Power Strips – Very handy.
21. High Efficiency Washing Machine – Have one. Good idea. No worth replacing a relatively new washing machine, but if you have an old one, or are shopping for a new one, do a bit of research and get the most efficient possible.
22. A Laptop – Unless you steal a lot of power from other people, I don’t think this will save you money!
23. TiVo – While it does let you watch TV with out commercials, it also promotes watching more TV, and it requires additional power compared to a TV alone. That said, I love my HTPC.
24. A Hybrid Car – Got it. Love it. Unless you drive a lot more then the national average, it won’t save you money. But it is better on the environment, and thats why I have one.
25. A Residential Windmill – This is just cool. As is solar panels for your house.

Again, remember to check out The Simple Dollar for the original article.

GM Announces Plug-in Saturn Vue Hybrid SUV

LA Auto Show: Rick Wagoner announces development of plug-in hybrid SUV

This is very interesting news. Perhaps when we are ready to replace the Honda CRV, this will be available.

GM sets out quite the schedule for alternative fuel production as well.

Programming Languages Are Like Women

This is a hoot. Don’t tell my wife that I am just got past 2nd base with Ms. C#.

“There are so many programming languages available that it can be very difficult to get to know them all well enough to pick the right one for you. On the other hand most men know what kind of woman appeals to them. So here is a handy guide for many of the popular programming languages that describes what kind of women they would be if programming languages were women.”

Vista RTM Not Resuming From Sleep

At first it seemed like an intermittent problem. Now however, it is a constant problem. On my Acer TravelMate 8204 laptop, Vista refuses to resume from sleep. Nothing happens. A few lights flash briefly, but thats it. It just sits there, with a blank screen, and no HD activity. Every single time.

I have installed a bunch of software between when it was working and now, but no drivers or anything like that. I suppose it could be the result of some software, but I pretty much only have what I need. If I have any luck in isolating a piece of software that is at fault, I will be sure to post. Otherwise, I am left waiting and hoping that some Acer drivers come out for Vista that fix the problem.
